Web hosting-dedicated and shared web hosting

Posted on 20th, 2009 by Shiv

There are various companies which are offering various web hosting plans. Normally all the companies either offer shared or dedicated hosting. Few of the companies offer both kind of hosting to cover the entire market. The question for a webmaster arises about choosing the kind of service and often the web masters end up making the wrong choice. They are either paying too much for dedicated hosting when they do not need it or they are loosing their customers and members by choosing the shared hosting while their website needs dedicated hosting. They may feel good about saving some money from the web hosting, but they are in fact the ones who are loosing more than saving.

When you are about to make your website live, you must look at the model of the website and the future expansion plans to know whether you need dedicated web hosting or shared web hosting plan. Here is the basic information about both kinds of plans to make you understand what would suit you better.

  • Shared web hosting: The shared web hosting is good for websites with small amount of data. The shared web hosting is shared by many customers and they all are using the same server at the same time. This may some times result in lag while downloading the website inside a browser. If your website is light and does not have content which is full of video and other things, you can easily survive on the shared web hosting server. The shared web hosting server is monitored by the company and all the good companies will add another server when it is over loaded. The bad companies will not add the servers and you will face problems. This is why choosing a good web hosting company becomes extremely important.
  • Dedicated web hosting: The other kind of web hosting is dedicated web hosting. The dedicated web hosting is different from shared web hosting in terms of the server usage and the number of websites which exist on that server. The dedicated servers are dedicated to one customer only. No more customers are added and the customer can keep it for his particular website. This helps the customers to host heavy websites with huge amount of data. This data can only be quickly achieved if the server is dedicated. They will not be comfortable in a shared server. The lag time will be unbearable and the ‘server down’ error would become common.

With this basic information about the kinds of web hosting, the web master should be able to choose the right kind of service for their website. They should careful look at the web site model and should not ignore the future expected increase in the usage and data. Shifting a server may become a major problem in the later stages and should be avoided.
